Do low-fat or non-fat foods help, or are they just an advertising gimmick?
As a nation we have been eating more and more low-fat or non-fat foods over the last 10 years and yet the percentage of the population that is overweight or obese continues to rise! This morning on the radio, they said that 40% of Scotland's population was either overweight or clinically obese. Why is that?
If you read the ingredients label on any low fat food, you will find that it generally is much longer than the non low fat alternative. I wonder how much healthier these other ingredients actually are! In actual fact, because the taste is lacking in those foods, the manufacturers increase the sugar levels. Because processed sugar is a very low quality source of energy that your body can only use for a short time, your clever body turns this extra energy into fat and stores it.
Often, those products claiming to be low-fat, are simply smaller portion sizes - but of course because you feel less guilty, you eat more of the product!
Meaning more profits for the food manufacturers. the food labelled low fat is dearer and you eat more of it.
